Preparing for birth and postpartum. Recommendations will vary based on the initial assessment and complexity of history/findings. Your physiotherapist will discuss a plan with you at your first appointment. Our recommended guideline for perinatal care:

→ Initial Perinatal Assessment (ideally before 20 weeks but it’s never too late!) - Address any underlying bladder, bowel, and/or musculoskeletal concerns. Learn exercises for strengthening and decreasing tension in your pelvic floor + core. No internal pelvic exam can be performed until 12 weeks.

→ Prenatal Follow up Visits (2-3 visits ideally scheduled between 12-33 weeks) - Internal pelvic examination can be performed. Assess and connect your core + pelvic floor to functional movement. Treat any bladder, bowel and/or musculoskeletal concerns. Update any exercise programs and address any symptoms/concerns as needed.

→ Birth Preparation Visits (2 visits - one 60 minute visit between 32-34 weeks and one 45 minute visit between 34-36 weeks) - Learn labour/delivery positions, breathing and pain management strategies, perineal massage and/or cesarean considerations postpartum.

→ Postpartum Follow-up Visit VIA TELEHEALTH - For CESAREAN birth (2 days - 1 week postpartum); for VAGINAL birth (2-4 weeks postpartum). You are welcome to come in person instead - but often we find parents are exhausted so this is a nice option.

→ Postpartum Visit IN-PERSON (2+ visits ideally starting at 6 weeks postpartum) - Internal pelvic examination can be performed after 6 weeks following clearance from your medical team. Reassess your pelvic floor, core, and return to function goals. Number of visits will vary based on return to activity goals + any ongoing postpartum issues following delivery.

→ Postpartum Return to Running/Exercise (2+ visits starting anytime) - for the active parent!
